THEURGY
Theurgy
is the 'Science or Art of Divine Works', it is also the
Telestic or 'Perfecting Work'. It is 'the Magic of Light', the highest
aspect of Ceremonial Magic; although it is not confined by ceremonial.
The Sacred Magic of the Angels is actually Theurgic in nature, as are
the ritual-methods of Alchemy.
For this sacred art, David uses the same term as Eliphas Levi did: Transcendental
Magic.
Theurgy is the purification and exaltation of the lower nature, so that
the individual may attain Spiritual, and ultimately Divine Consciousness.
Theurgy was the inmost essence-teachings of the ancient Mystery schools
of Egypt, Eleusis, Israel and Chaldea. It was the spiritual discipline
of the Neo-Platonists of Alexandria, and the alchemical Philosophers;
it is the 'Work of the Chariot', or Merkabah mysticism, of the Classical
Qabalists.
Theurgy was practised by Pythagoras, Plato, Iamblichus, King Solomon,
and Proclus. Saints Dionysius the Areopagite and Clement of Alexandria
were among the Church Fathers who extolled and practised it; it was also
practised by I'bn Gabriol and the Baal-Shem-Tov.
In his book 'The Work of the Kabbalist', Z'ev ben Shimon Halevi wrote:
'… Theurgy … was the art and science of adjusting situations from the
higher realms so as to allow a process to proceed or to create conditions
wherein a situation could develop that would aid Creation at large, or
an individual to evolve, and so serve God.' [chapter 45; page 196]
David does occasional lectures and workshops on Transcendental Magic [Theurgy];
although all ceremonies he employs are Theurgic in nature. Once a year
he conducts an intensive retreat for intermediate and advanced practitioners,
'The Citadel of Light'; in which are practised and taught the sacred rites;
invocation; soul-ascension and Chariot work - for individual evolution,
in Divine Service.
